Choose your state of consciousness.
Binaural beats have been known about for a long time, but it is only in the last 20 years or so that their use has become more widespread, in line with the increase in use of digital media generally.
Binaural beats are a completely safe audio technology that can be used to create brainwave states equivalent to those observed for deep meditation, relaxation, super-learning, lucid dreaming and deep sleep, as well as other more exotic states of consciousness.
By choosing a particular binaural beat you can modify your experience of life, enhance your meditation practice, improve your work or study performance, even support natural cycles such as sleep.
This is possible due to a natural tendency of human brainwaves to synchronise with an external frequency stimulus; what is called brainwave entrainment.
When two tones of slightly different frequencies are played separately into the left and right ear, each ear hearing a different tone, the brain actually hears a third frequency, a pulse equal to the difference between the two tones.
Using this method very precise virtual sounds (called binaural beats) can be created in the brain, including frequencies below the normal threshold of human hearing.
This is important as low brainwave frequencies are correlated with more settled states of consciousness such as relaxation, meditation and sleep: brainwave states that can now be actively stimulated using binaural beats.
| Frequency | Name | Associated with |
| >40Hz | Gamma Waves | Higher mental activity including perception, problem solving, fear. |
| 13-40Hz | Beta Waves | Busy or anxious thinking, concentration, arousal, feelings of separation, cognition. |
| 7-13Hz | Alpha Waves | Relaxation, superlearning, serotonin production, pre-sleep and pre-wake drowsiness. |
| 4-7Hz | Theta Waves | Dreams, deep meditation, increased creativity, emotional experiences, REM sleep. |
| <4Hz | Delta Waves | Deep dreamless sleep, release of HGH, loss of body awareness. |
It takes typically 7-8 minutes for the brain to tune in to a binaural beat frequency; shorter periods of listening are unlikely to produce any effect.

Some of the reported benefits of using binaural beats are:
All of which are achievable completely safely and with the minimum of effort. You just need to find the time each day.
Binaural beats do not require any active participation from the listener, and so can be combined with other complimentary activities; such as meditation or study.
Note: binaural beats require the use of stereo headphones in order to be effective. They should NOT be used while driving or operating heavy machinery.
