Escaping the stress of modern life

Studies have shown that natural environment sounds promote relaxation and reduce stress.

There are two reasons for this: firstly, a backdrop of the sound of ocean waves, wind in the trees, rain or chirping birds creates what is called white (or pink) noise. White noise blocks out distracting sounds and has been shown to relax both humans and animals, help concentration and promote better sleep.

Secondly, listening to nature sounds can bring back enjoyable memories of relaxing outdoors or being on vacation. Natural sounds remind us of a world beyond the stress of traffic, tight deadlines and other problems. We regain a sense of perspective.

There may also be another reason why nature sounds are so effective: the subtle harmonic frequencies of natural environments. Some traditions (esp. Gandharva Veda) maintain that certain frequencies, or harmonies, exist within nature and that these vary according to environment, time of day and activity (such as during a rainstorm). It could be that capturing pristine nature sounds allows us to tune in to these natural harmonics simply by replaying the sounds themselves.

Use these sounds in the car, at home or at work as a backdrop to your activity. Better still, find a comfortable place to sit and relax and really indulge yourself: imagine yourself lying on the beach, walking in the woods or allow yourself to focus on a pleasant memory associated with the sound.

Being able to let go of worries and tension is an important part of living a healthy life. Be sure to give yourself time each day to step out of your head and you will see a noticeable benefit in the form of increased mental clarity and reduced physical tension.

These soundscapes are 100% uninterrupted nature sounds: pure tranquillity recorded in stereo. They are free for you to use as often as you like.
